Introduction
Lake Nakuru National Park is one of Kenya’s most iconic protected areas, set around a shallow soda lake at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Known for its rhinos, flamingos, lush woodlands, and dramatic viewpoints, it offers rich biodiversity in a compact, easily accessible setting.
Wildlife
Lake Nakuru is renowned for its thriving populations of black and white rhinos, protected within a secure sanctuary—making the park one of the best places in East Africa to see these endangered species up close. The park is also home to the rare Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, impala, olive baboons, hyenas, warthogs, and hippos along the lake shores.
Predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs roam the acacia forests, while the wetlands are alive with thousands of flamingos and migratory bird species. With over 450 bird species recorded, Lake Nakuru is an internationally recognised Important Birding Area.
The changing water levels of Lake Nakuru mean flamingo numbers rise and fall, but they remain a key attraction when present in large flocks, painting the shoreline pink.
